Speaking the language of the soul
SAN DIEGO COSTUMMUNITIES
Promoting, preserving and celebrating the diverse cultural identities of San Diego’s communities through a year-long series of free, public costume-art events across the City, where the unique identities of marginalized, excluded, and underrepresented communities are explored, expressed, and showcased through events such as include mobile and static exhibitions, design & crafting workshops, performances, roundtables, theater and dance. Each costume and activity reflect the characters, values, and cultural narratives of these communities, addressing facets of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexuality and neurodiversity, fostering equality, inclusion, and social change. Represented local communities include, but are not limited to, African-American, Asian-American, Latine, Afro-Latine, LGTBIQ+, the burner community and the kinkster one. We bring them together with San Diego creative communities such as fashion designers, costume artists, performers, and circus/theatre collectives, and collaborating with local archivists, researchers, arti(vi)sts arts and cultural centers, makerspaces, educational institutions, and local nonprofits dedicated to social equity and access to public art. By providing increased exposure, interconnectedness, and artistic excellence for and by San Diego residents and visitors, the arts, culture, and creative sectors are enriched, also boosting the local economy around the venues where the events take place, where creative vendors participate.
