Loiza Masks

This initiative celebrates the history and legacy of Maroon and Libertos communities across the Caribbean (a.k.a. freedom colonies), with a special focus on the vibrant town of Loiza, Puerto Rico. In Loiza, Vejigante and Spaniard knight costumes are crafted for a Carnival-like parade held every year at the end of July. A dynamic array of activities will take place in San Diego, California, including lectures, folk art exhibits, Vejigante mask-carving sessions, and Bomba dance workshops.

The project is carried out in collaboration with The World Beat Center in San Diego, California, along with several arts and cultural centers, and artists from Puerto Rico, the U.S., and other California/US organizations. All participating entities are non-profit organizations.
